I'm Teva Johnstone, a licensed therapist in California who works primarily with parents. I specialize in Maternal Mental Health and welcome mothers and fathers struggling to adjust to the transition. I also see adults with ADHD, depression, and internet addiction.
My approach
I'm an integrative therapist and use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, CBT for Adult ADHD, and Sensorimotor/Somatic practices. When working with clients with neurodevelopmental differences and mental health conditions, I use strength-based skill development and allow the client's values to guide our work.
My focus
I typically work with parents who feel confused by their child's behavior. I see postpartum (and beyond) mothers who are struggling to adjust to the tremendous lifestyle change inherent in parenting. The parents I see have symptoms of depression and anxiety, and they often feel like they are not enough. They have difficulty focusing due to exhaustion, ADHD, trauma histories, and burnout.
My communication style
My style is warm, active, and solution-focused. I communicate in a relaxed and clear way, occasionally using humor. My clients feel seen and supported in their difficulties. I help people get unstuck with concrete tools and gentle accountability.
My journey to mental healthcare
I am a second-generation Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I decided to become a maternal mental health and parenting therapist after going through my own journey as a mother of a more intense infant and coming away from that experience with deep compassion and a desire to help others.
My goals for you
Early in our work together, I will learn about your hopes for therapy and collaborate on a realistic plan. Our work will stay focused on your goals and vision for your life and relationships.
My first session with you
In the first session, you will share why you reached out for help and what you are hoping to achieve from therapy. I will ask questions about your history, strengths, challenges, habits, relationships, and goals. You will have an opportunity to ask me questions about my experience and approach to therapy.
