I'm Jim Kenshalo, LCSW and my work was honed in multiple forensic settings, in addition to concurrent employment with Family Services of the Northbay, Federal Probation and Parole, Maryann Barr and Associates, and so forth. I worked for three years on The California Task Force on Self-esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility, and I consider this, along with a stint at the San Francisco Comedy College, to be an integrative cornerstone of my approach. I focus generally on adults in relationship issues, and individuals and families experiencing divorce, separation, and custody matters.
My approach
Therapeutic approach is wholly dependent on each individual and typically determined in the first and second visits. In my toolbox are multiple approaches, never found a one-size-fits-all methodology. Generally, my approaches are integrative, utilizing cognitive behavioral, insight-oriented, and psychodynamic.
My focus
Typically, my work has been with adults in situational or life circumstance issues, as well as relationship problems, utilizing the work and style of Gottman, Rogers, and Satir.
My communication style
Many people have said talking to me is "real," and not fluffy. Most sessions are imbued with humor and absolute acceptance, and I strive to make matters short-term vs. long-term. Communication is active, motivating, and involved.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have been a therapist for four decades in a number of venues. Some triggering events were the unidentified depression and family pathology leading to the two suicides of a daughter and her mother when in my youth. I was renewed some years ago with participation in the California Task Force to Promote Self Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility.
My goals for you
Goal setting with clients is, of course, based on resilience, motivation, and by mutual agreement and mutual suggestion, democratic, in a word.
My first session with you
Referrals are contacted either prior to the first session or invited to contact me, to lessen any awkwardness. Well begun is half done, as someone said.
