Hello and welcome; my name is Heather Thomas, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I've been working with individuals, families, and couples for over 10 years, helping them find the solutions within themselves, learn to emotionally regulate despite what is going on around them, learn to manage distress and to problem-solve. My goal is to help you create a life that is worth living and one where you are able to be the best version of yourself.
My approach
I am a trained Jungian therapist, and I use a psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, person-centered approach. I am trained in ACT, CBT, CPT, Trauma Informed, DBT, Schema Therapy, and EMDR. I like to use a holistic approach since humans are multi-faceted, and not one approach works for everyone. I am also trained in Gottman Couples Counseling, level I and II, and a Parenting with Love and Logic instructor.
My focus
I work with pre-teens, teens, young adults, and ages up to 90. I also work with couples and families. I work with LGBTQ+ folks and have worked with clients who are in ethical, non-monogamous relationships, divorced, and blended families.
My communication style
I am a huge fan of Carl Rogers and his unconditional positive regard approach to all people. I create a welcoming, safe space where you can explore all the versions and aspects of yourself without judgment or unwanted advice. My number one goal is to ensure you know you are of worth and value intrinsically, that you are enough, and you don't have to prove your value to anyone. You are loved.
My journey to mental healthcare
Like a lot of therapists, I was attracted to the ability to help others. I have engaged in therapy and saw firsthand how beneficial it can be. My life is richer and fuller for it, and I enjoy teaching clients what I have learned through the years. Seeing clients come into their own, to find their voice, and to resolve long-standing issues makes my work meaningful and drives me to continue. My love language is acts of service, and I believe I reap the rewards of being of service to others.
My goals for you
I like to work with SMART goals and take baby steps to gain momentum and self-efficacy. I am also very skill based and engage clients with homework, worksheets, and book recommendation, and I also teach Somatic approaches to their mental and emotional health needs.
My first session with you
You can expect a warm, welcoming, and safe environment. We will start to get to know each other with a brief intake. I like to clarify any diagnoses and answer any questions you might have. I will explain any modalities we will work with, and I am very open to feedback and strive to ensure you feel heard and understood.
