Hello! My name is Robin Inouye, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with California License #15119. The primary focus of my practice is on treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, including trauma resulting in PTSD, and helping those coping with stressful life transitions, including military lifestyle issues. Although I only treat adults at this time, I have extensive training and expertise in working with children of all ages. Hence, I can be a tremendous resource for assistance with general parenting and specific strategies you can utilize to ameliorate behavioral and mental health issues you are facing with your children.
My approach
The most common approaches I utilize in providing therapy include the following: Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness practices, military lifestyle issues, Psychodynamic, parenting practices, and Family Systems.
My focus
The focus of my practice is on working with adults who are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and those coping with stressful life transitions. I have 12 years of experience treating service members and their families around challenging military lifestyle issues such as deployment and multiple transitions. I am skilled at working with clients seeking assistance in a caregiver role, and parents who are struggling with general parenting issues and/or their children's emotional and/or behavioral problems.
My communication style
I believe that our work together must encompass both the building of a genuine, empathic, and trusting relationship combined with the skillful application of clinical interventions that target your specific issues and stressors. I also believe that the practice of active listening including empathizing, normalizing, and validating clients are essential building blocks for a successful therapeutic relationship.
My journey to mental healthcare
I had the great fortune of knowing I wanted to be a therapist as early as junior high school when I was the person my friends would come to for help with their personal problems. I may not have known what type of a "counselor" I wanted to be, but I always knew I wanted to be one. Luckily, I had a clear path forward for college and beyond and never strayed from that. I am truly a "people person," both interested and curious about human behavior and what makes people tick (or not). I care, and I am passionate about my work, and I hold myself accountable for achieving results that will help lead you toward an enhanced sense of well-being and reach your full potential.
My goals for you
I utilize a solution-focused motivational interviewing style of asking specific questions that help you identify and describe, with great specificity, your desired outcome of therapy, exactly what that would look like, and concrete changes you and others around you will notice to measure progress. Goal setting will also include identifying the internal and external resources you already possess that will help you achieve the changes you want to make.
My first session with you
The first session will be utilized to 1) conduct a psycho-social history, as I believe the more I know about you the better I am equipped to provide you personalized services, 2) as described above, we will then move into a solution-focused interview whereby I will ask many questions related to your desired outcome of therapy and how we can move forward toward achieving those outcomes.
