Hey there! My name is Sophia Hutton and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Southern California. I have a diverse background and skillset within the field of mental health which I utilize to support teens and adults impacted by anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and day-to-day life stressors. My approach to therapy is collaborative and centered around the development of a positive therapeutic relationship in which the client feels safe to process, explore, admit, grieve, celebrate, and heal.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is humanistic-driven with the focus being on establishing a relationship of authenticity, safety, and acceptance. In doing so, there is space to confront, challenge, and problem solve. I have experience in a number of therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, which I draw from in creating an approach that is most suitable for each individual client. I focus on the development of self-advocacy, empowerment, and communication skills as tools to help the client grow in all sectors of their life.
My focus
I believe that my style and approach are a good fit for teens, young adults, and adults impacted by depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and other life challenges that are preventing them from being their healthiest and happiest selves.
My communication style
First and foremost, my priority is to develop a trusting relationship and craft an environment in which the client feels accepted and cared for. With this as the foundation, I am then able to support the client in feeling safe to examine different perspectives, confront unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, and move towards positive change to improve overall functioning and well-being.
My journey to mental healthcare
My true "aha" moment when I realized I wanted to be a therapist happened during my freshman year of college while I was volunteering in juvenile hall. I asked one of my students what they needed the most and they simply said, "just someone to talk to." That simple response was the catalyst for my journey to becoming a therapist as I realized just how valuable feeling seen and heard is. I have remained motivated to do this work because I truly believe there is no greater privilege than bearing witness to someone's story.
My goals for you
I believe that the client is the "expert" of themselves, not me. Thus, goal setting should be a collaborative process where the client and I determine what they want to improve, achieve, or enhance in their lives and how we can work together to make that happen.
My first session with you
In the first session, you can expect the focus to be on learning more about you as a person, creating an initial connection, and addressing any questions or concerns you may have. I hope to gather more information about what brings you to therapy, how you've been feeling, what you've been experiencing, and what you're hoping to get out of your treatment.
