My name is Kimetha (Kim) Petteway-Turner and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Los Angeles County. I have 15 years of clinical experience, working with individuals, couples, and families. I have experience in treating anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, women's mental health, and life transitions.
My approach
My approach to therapy is driven by the needs of my clients. Frequently, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), as these modalities help clients learn to change their thinking and gain control of their emotions and behaviors.
My focus
I work with individuals, couples, and families; and have a special interest in assisting women with building resilience and maintaining good mental health. I am experienced in the areas of anxiety, depression, grief and loss, marriage and partnerships, and life transitions. My desire is to provide clients with the tools to live their best life possible.
My communication style
I like to establish a safe and positive environment for my clients, where they feel comfortable and free to express themselves honestly and without fear of judgment. I have a firm belief that trust and authenticity are the keys to successful outcomes.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've always had a desire to help others through difficult situations and to see them come through as a stronger and wiser individual, but I didn't initially pursue becoming a therapist. For many years I worked in a corporate environment and found myself being the person that co-workers sought out when they needed someone to talk to. As life would have it, I too encountered difficulty along the way and sought therapy to deal with the situation. In one of our sessions, the therapist asked if I had ever thought about becoming a therapist because she felt that I had "something". I left that session knowing that I was ready to follow my desire to make a difference in the lives of others. This work is my passion. I love what I do and look forward to seeing lives changed for the better.
My goals for you
When developing goals for therapy, the first step is to ensure that both the client and I have a clear understanding of the desired outcome of therapy. Then I follow the client's lead and offer guidance as we develop goals that allow the client to achieve that outcome. Finally, I ensure that the client takes full ownership of the goals and understands that we will work together towards the achievement of the goals.
My first session with you
My first session with a client is the starting point for developing a comfortable and trusting therapeutic relationship. We will review required practice information, with the majority of the session devoted to the client sharing the reason for seeking therapy and the history of how the issue/concern developed. I will ask questions to ensure that I have a clear understanding of the concern so I can offer the best possible solutions.
