Theresa Leal, LCSW...I am an older practitioner and have worked a lot with families, young adults, and teens. I am very goal-oriented and will work with clients to help them identify their needs and help them work toward solutions. I believe in being positive and looking for how to help my clients develop their own answers so they have ownership of them.
My approach
I have been using an eclectic approach to working with my clients; my background is family/child emphasis. I use CBT and am very solution-focused when working with clients. I will use different approaches when working with a client; often we will work through solutions and issues together.
My focus
I am currently working with a family and teenager. I am also working with two teens on their own and I have a number of young adults in their 20s I am working with. I have been working with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, PTSD, sexual abuse, racism, and gender issues.
My communication style
I am very welcoming and try to remain positive when working with my clients. I also try to maintain a sense of humor, so we can also see the humor sometimes in our lives. I will share with clients something that I think will be of help to them, so I do a lot of reading and sharing.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was a Social Worker for many years, at Foster Youth Services, CPS, and then I went back to school to get my MSW and also got a PPS credential so I could be a school counselor. I worked for over 20 years as a High School counselor at a Continuation High School, where I also coordinated a Teen Parent Program with moms and babies on campus. During my last years as a school counselor, I worked for the United Auburn Indian Community School as a counselor.
My goals for you
One of the first things I do with clients is ask about what they would like to accomplish in working with me.
My first session with you
I introduce myself and give them a little of my background and then I let them talk about why they are here and what they want to accomplish through therapy.
