My name is Bethany Theodore, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I take a strength-based and client-centered approach to therapy. A lot of my past experience working with individuals has been with adolescents and young adults who often had never had any experience with a therapist before. I have had success in working with these individuals. I've treated a lot of common issues that arise with these populations such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and family dynamics.
My approach
I utilize various treatment modalities which are evidence-based and strength-based including Client-Centered Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Practices, and Motivational Interviewing. I like to utilize journals and worksheets that are tailored to my client's needs when appropriate.
My focus
A lot of my past experience working with individuals has been with adolescents, young adults, and families. Common issues I have had a lot of experience with are anxiety, depression, self-esteem, anger, academic struggles, ADHD, relationships (friendships, family, or romantic), communication, family dynamics, peer pressure, past trauma, and women's issues. I have worked with many parents as well if you are in need of help with your teen.
My communication style
I strive to create a comfortable and safe space for my clients where they can share their thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged. Past clients have told me I am an easygoing and laid-back person which made it easy for them to feel comfortable with opening up to me.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was exposed to counseling as a child because of a couple of different events that happened in my life. My mother was and is still a social worker and so I learned a lot about social work from her work. I admired the work she did and saw how impactful she could be in their lives. I decided to obtain my master's degree in social work. I have worked in the field doing various jobs such as school social work and helping at-risk youth in the justice system. I learned what I enjoy the most is being a support person to my clients in not only the lows but being there to celebrate their successes!
My goals for you
Goal setting is a collaborative effort. I like to explore goals with clients at the beginning of treatment so that we keep that goal in mind during our time together. We can add goals as treatment progresses as well.
My first session with you
You can expect in the first session to simply get to know each other a little bit and figure out if we are a good fit. I think it is important you feel comfortable with your therapist so you get to make the call on whether you want to continue to work with me. We will discuss what brought you to therapy, your expectations, and your goals. In ongoing sessions, we will identify interventions that best fit you and your needs. I enjoy tailoring interventions for each client based on your strengths, likes, and needs. Therapy can be more than just talking, I encourage my clients to utilize the tools they already have in their life that they enjoy that help build those positive and healthy habits such as art, writing, or exercise.
