My name is Natalie Graves, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Sacramento, California, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults and adolescents dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, trauma, life stressors, family and relationship conflicts, and self-esteem issues using models such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy.
My approach
My approach to therapy depends on the needs of each client I work with. I do not believe one size fits all, as every client has unique needs. I most frequently use Narrative Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, as I find both of these support me in partnering with the client to meet them where they are, own their stories, and give them tools to feel self-confident, in control of their emotions, and able to navigate successfully in relationships with others.
My focus
I have over 8 years of experience working with adolescents and adults experiencing challenges with anxiety, depression, trauma, strained family relationships, stress, lack of self-confidence, gender and sexuality struggles, self-harm behaviors, overwhelm, shame, life transitions and social pressures, and grief and loss. I work to help my clients understand and accept themselves, as well as build skills to help them navigate life's challenges with more confidence so that they can feel better about themselves and their ability to handle what comes their way.
My communication style
My communication style fosters a sense of calm and acceptance. I listen without judgment and strive to join my clients where they are so that they feel heard, understood, supported, and, most importantly, unconditionally accepted for who they are. I love to use humor where appropriate, as I believe laughter is healing.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I enjoy helping clients learn and accept themselves, tap into their strengths, and grow in the areas they desire to improve. I know how hard it can be to ask for help, so I am honored when clients choose me to be a part of their journey toward healing. I enjoy helping clients take control of the pen and write their own stories. I truly believe that the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we are capable of dictate our quality of life and overall happiness.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is all about working together to define what you want to get out of our time together and the areas of your life that you are most wanting to change. This starts with a focus on building trust and an understanding of the therapy process and your needs within it. Over time clients' goals shift and change, and I work to remain flexible to meet the needs of my clients.
My first session with you
During our first session, I will primarily focus on getting to know you and what brought you to therapy. I want to understand who you are and what your previous experiences in therapy, if any, have been so that I know to best support you. I take my time to explain the therapy process and encourage you to ask any questions you may have about me, my experience, and my approach to therapy. I take my time to build rapport and trust so that you feel heard and unconditionally accepted for who you are.
