Hello! My name is Gary L Bushweiler, Ph.D. I am a licensed clinical psychologist (California license #PSY 5340). I provide individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to adults and teens (14 and up]. I utilize evidence-based psychotherapy for the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, and challenging life transitions such as aging, death of a partner or spouse, and bereavement. My areas of specialization include helping individuals and couples develop new skills and approaches to bring about change in their lives.
My approach
I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for individuals to express their concerns and feelings and be understood. My role is to collaborate with clients to bring about healthy changes in their lives. I utilize evidence-based treatment, supported by current research, to help my clients. Generally, I draw from the cognitive, behavioral, and neuroscience-based schools of therapy, and have been trained in approaches to deal with depression, anxiety, trauma, and interpersonal problems. My psychotherapy approach includes a number of therapeutic strategies that are based on the needs of my clients, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach.
My focus
In my long career, I have worked with a large variety of individuals. Depression and anxiety disorders are generally the most frequent life problems I work with. I am also skilled in working with chronic pain, relationship problems, job, and home stress, as well as current and past trauma.
My communication style
My style with clients is non-judgmental and interactive. Clients are encouraged and are free to discuss any concerns or issues, past or present. I engage directly with a client during the therapy session, using clear communication to help understand my clients and provide honest, open feedback and suggestions for change.
My journey to mental healthcare
I believe that I am, by nature, a helping person. Through my continued training as a psychologist, I have found a path to express that helping nature. In my long career, I continue to experience the reward of participating in and defining and redefining each client's journey.
My goals for you
Successful goal setting is based on an understanding between my clients and me regarding the problems or concerns that a client wants help with. I believe it is important for my clients to have a clear and agreed on goal to work toward following each session. Progress toward goals is reviewed and goals can be revised as new learning occurs.
My first session with you
During my first session with clients, I listen to the concerns and problems of my clients, clarifying and working towards an accurate understanding and assessment of the issues. I engage directly in the process. Typically, I ask for feedback about the session. Further, I offer suggestions for goals, or "homework" for our next session.
