Hi there, I'm Marina!

I am Marina Tonkonogy, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, with over 15 years of professional counseling experience. My therapeutic approach is person-centered, meaning I strongly believe in validating everything you experience. Your thoughts and feelings are significant and genuine, and I'm here to support you in tapping into your inner wisdom to find the answers you seek. My expertise lies in various areas, including self-esteem, complex PTSD (C-PTSD), personal and professional growth, and relationship issues."

My approach

I place a strong emphasis on collaboration and shared responsibilities between my clients and me. Should you choose me as your therapist, we will work together as a team, sharing responsibility for the therapy process and its outcomes. Your active participation in therapy is just as crucial as my role. In my practice, I integrate various therapeutic approaches, including Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), alongside the Humanistic/Existential school of thought. This diverse combination allows me to tailor the approach to best suit your unique needs and goals.

My focus

If you've been feeling like a "misfit" for a significant period, my therapeutic style might be an excellent fit for you. I find great satisfaction in assisting individuals who feel out of place, grappling with issues related to their true identity, and connecting with their authentic selves. My experience and comfort extend to working with individuals who have a history of complex childhood and adult trauma. If you're open to self-reflection and exploring different perspectives, we can work together to navigate your journey toward healing and growth. You and I could be a great match on this transformative path.

My communication style

In our collaborative journey, you will find me both professional and approachable. I strive to assess your situation objectively and neutrally, yet I am not emotionless or detached. When I empathize with your experiences, you will feel it, knowing that I am a genuine human being who understands you at a heartfelt level, not just intellectually. My goal is to create a safe and authentic space where we can work together toward your growth and well-being.

My journey to mental healthcare

Psychology wasn't my initial academic pursuit. In my home country, I earned a degree in computer science. However, my time in the United States brought about life-altering events that shifted my perspective, revealing a misalignment between my previous career path and my true self. Switching career paths unlocked hidden abilities within me that I didn't know existed. I've tapped into my intuition, gaining insight into the complexities of the human mind and emotions. I discovered an innate ability to empathize with others, understand their unique situations, and provide support. This transformative journey has enriched my life and enabled me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

My goals for you

I approach goal setting with my clients through a collaborative and holistic process. We define clear and realistic goals together, break them down into manageable steps, and regularly evaluate progress. I provide support, encouragement, and accountability to empower my clients on their journey to success.

My first session with you

In your first session with me, I'll meet you exactly where you are on your unique journey. We'll create an open and accepting environment where you can freely share your thoughts and feelings. Together, we'll explore your life experiences and current challenges. Our focus will be on what matters most to you. Whether you want to discuss your past, present struggles, or your sense of purpose, we'll proceed at a pace that feels comfortable for you. By the end of the session, you'll gain a clearer understanding of how therapy can benefit you, and we'll work together to address your specific goals and aspirations.
