My name is Tyler Barmby and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) located in the Central Coast city of San Luis Obispo, California and work statewide with clients via telehealth. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with anxiety, depression, and stress disorders. I utilize a client-centered and cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach to support clients in meeting their goals.
My approach
My approach to therapy is client-centered and varies based on each client's specific individualized needs. I use a client-centered approach at the onset of therapy to create a positive safe environment for clients to identify and explore their individual needs. This allows each client to experience validation and build trust while creating goals for treatment. As therapy progresses, I use cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and solution-focused approaches to partner with clients in better understanding their experiences so we can take an informed approach in taking the next steps forward toward achieving their goals.
My focus
I have found my style and approach to work are a good fit with teens, adolescents, and adults who are working through various phases of life transitions. Oftentimes, life stressors can impact the lens through how someone feels about and relates with themselves and others. I work with my clients to better understand how stressful experiences can impact thoughts, feelings, and perceptions, and support clients in identifying current strengths/coping skills and building new skills/strategies to better manage these challenges, and create improved self-confidence moving forward.
My communication style
I use a client-centered communication approach which allows me to focus on understanding clients' needs, thoughts, and perceptions before providing feedback. This helps maintain open and clear communication and sets client needs at the forefront of treatment.
My journey to mental healthcare
My friends, family, and peers often told me I was a good listener and had strengths in encouraging them and others. I have found being an encourager and helping others feel valued and understood brings me joy and contentment. As I entered my later years of high school, it became clear to me I wanted to use these talents to serve the community and those around me. I have also experienced the benefits of therapy, and recognize firsthand how being heard and valued can effect positive change. I want to bring this same value to those I work with.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is to partner with you to understand your individual concerns and needs. By developing a shared understanding, we can work together to set measurable treatment goals so you can see your progress as the therapy process moves forward. As trust is built naturally during therapy, this process of creating and reaching treatment goals can be dynamic, and clients may change their goals as needed.
My first session with you
The first session of therapy will allow us to get to know one another. I will be ready with questions to help us identify your reasons for seeking therapy and will want to know how you have been feeling recently. You may feel the need to discuss something urgently, and I will be more than happy to listen attentively to these concerns. The initial session allows me to begin to get to know you and your experiences so I can partner with you to identify concerns and create treatment goals.
