Angela Garbin, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist. Every client is unique, and the process of therapy is different for everyone. My approach varies with the needs of my clients. Always at the heart of my practice is listening carefully and maintaining a stance of curiosity with the goal of trying to understand my clients' unique experiences in the world. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where dialogue and the process of reflection and exploration allow for insight and growth to develop.
My approach
I believe that the most important factor of successful treatment is not theory or technique but the quality of the relationship between the client and therapist.
My focus
The majority of my clients are creative individuals who are experiencing some type of challenge in their life. I am especially understanding and successful with people dealing with loneliness, depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, creative block, and addiction.
My communication style
I work collaboratively with a warm, empathic, down-to-earth style that helps individuals feel comfortable and supported.
My journey to mental healthcare
Psychology is my second career path. I worked as a film/video editor for twelve years in New York City. In 2007, I relocated to Los Angeles and decided to pursue a personal interest that had developed during my own therapy in my mid-twenties. This led me to enroll at Antioch University Los Angeles, where I earned my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology in 2010. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2016, furthering my education and expanding my expertise in the field. Personal experience has shown me the many benefits of therapy, including symptom relief, greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, higher quality relationships, and a more engaging and connected life.
My goals for you
Goal setting in treatment is a collaborative process that empowers clients to take an active role in their personal growth and development.
My first session with you
The first session is a chance to get to know each other and determine if we are a good fit. I will ask about what is going on in your life and ask the question, why therapy right now? I may gather some relevant personal history, may provide some information about the therapy process, and what you can expect in future sessions if we decide to work together.
