Nancy Jo Rettig LMFT #32326. In my 30+ years of counseling, I find the best approach to be candid yet caring. Together we will find insight, support, and commitment to change, to get you where you want to be.
My approach
The best therapeutic practices result in behavioral and psychological changes that relate to real-life situations. Therefore, I lean heavily on Cognitive Behavioral, Coaching, Mediation, and Goal-Oriented strategies. These solid techniques allow us to monitor your success and hold you accountable to your goals. Ultimately, you and others will start to notice your positive changes.
My focus
Although I can't say you will always be "comfortable" in therapy, know that frequently, taking on challenges results in some level of DIS-comfort. Trying new approaches is not easy, but worth the hard work and feeling of pride you will have when you start overcoming your hurdles. Think of this experience as a New Year's Eve fresh start.
My communication style
Clients have written the following upon termination of the case: "I appreciate your straightforward approach and attention to problem-solving." "It amazed me how you analyzed things I said and put feelings to my words." "My granddaughter and I learned new life skills and are much stronger and prepared for our roles." I would say I can be challenging for some but take my role seriously enough not to waste their time or money.
My journey to mental healthcare
Terribly unconventional but truthfully as a child I became engrossed in the "Bob Newhart Show" from the 1970's where the viewer was given a birds-eye-view of the life of a Psychologist. I found people's roadblocks fascinating and began to visualize each client's story as a puzzle: the background being the life story and the misguidance from not understanding how each piece relates to the next. Psychotherapy is unfolding the pieces to produce a new picture of their life.
My goals for you
Directly after the intake, I propose and work collaboratively to write a detailed description of tools needed to achieve their desired goals and/or resolve their problems. Approximately every 3 months we review the progress with a numbers scale rating list. Most are happy with their progress by this time and may (or not) chose to continue.
My first session with you
Initially, I introduce myself and explain the benefits and limitations of therapy. After that, I listen attentively to their journey from childhood to the present. I take copious notes and only interrupt for clarity till conclusion. At that point, I gave "impressions" and suggestions toward our agreement on therapy goals.
