Hi there, I'm Gretchen!

Hello and welcome! Thank you for viewing my profile more closely. I am a strong advocate and very passionate about helping clients further their understandings of themselves and their relationships, as well as finding a deeper meaning and joy in their lives. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California and have a substantial amount of experience in working with relational issues, women, trauma, depression and anxiety, ADHD, teens and young adults, adults 65+, life transitions, career concerns and issues, self esteem issues, and other general mental health concerns.

My approach

I love to utilize humor and a warm, strengths based compassionate approach with my clients. I often use cognitive behavioral techniques and worksheets, empathetic listening, and solution focused methods in order to help you achieve your goals in therapy. My theoretical approaches center around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Humanistic and Person Centered therapy as well as solution oriented and strengths based therapies.

My focus

I have worked in the past at a private practice, sexual assault center, schools, seniors as well as on a crisis team and this varied experience has helped me to have a broad range of skills and outlooks to utilize with my clients. I love animals and have used animal assisted therapies in some of my work in the past. I typically work most often with teens as well as adult men and women of all ages and my primary focuses have often been relational issues (communication, marriage satisfaction, infidelity, divorce, setting boundaries, communication, etc), trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, self esteem and self confidence building, career exploration, and life transitions.

My communication style

Clients can expect support, warmth and safety from me in our work together. I love seeing clients identify their strengths and work through their challenges, and am honored when I get to be part of this with them. I like to work collaboratively with my clients. We will work together to find solutions to the challenges and goals you identify, and I can help you develop new insights into your life and create new tools to manage them. It is my belief that you (the client) are the expert on yourself and your life, and I try to have this theory be the backbone of our work together. I enjoy finding a variety of coping skills that each individual client can utilize even after therapy has terminated.

My goals for you

I work with you starting our first session to explore what goals you are wanting to achieve and what you are hoping to get out of our work together. Every few sessions or so we can revisit to make sure we are working towards what you are wanting. This check in also can be helpful because sometimes, goals can change! In our work in talking about goals and what you are wanting to work on, we also discuss how to work towards that goal and what that will look like in our work together.

My first session with you

You can expect a warm, safe space to start to get to know one another. I always make sure to take first sessions as a pace that feels comfortable to you. You can expect a first session to talk mostly about what brought you to therapy, your history and background, your interests, strengths and relationships. First sessions tend to cover a lot of information and after that we start to dive more into what you are wanting to work on more specifically.
