Hi there, I'm Deborah!

Hello, I am Deb! My name is Deborah Osborn and thank you for reading my profile. It is difficult to convey my work in a few paragraphs. I have been counseling since 1998. I am an LCSW licensed in California. Much of my career has been working with adolescents and young adults, but I have worked with adults in the later stages of life and I find it very satisfying. Anxiety and stress, trauma, stage of life transition, and relationships have been my focus.

My approach

I understand that change is not easy and I know that no single approach to change works for everyone. With this in mind, I am willing to draw upon a number of modalities. My primary approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is often influenced by Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Reality Therapy, and Family Systems therapy. I strongly believe that an eclectic approach to the therapeutic process allows us to tailor the work to the individual client.

My focus

I find that my approach and experience fit well with the needs of young adults who may be dealing with challenges due to life transitions and social pressures. Older adults often struggle with stage of life changes and I am comfortable working through these issues as well.

My communication style

I strongly believe that the client is the authority. It is their 'User's Manual' for their life that they are writing. I want to help and offer options. I want to plant seeds. I want to empower the clients to have the confidence and skills to care for themselves.

My journey to mental healthcare

I had a variety of management and educational jobs in my 20s. In my early 30s after managing a remote lodge for 7 years, I started volunteering at a domestic violence shelter. I loved the work and decided this would be my career path. I completed two master's degrees worked for West Virginia University Counseling Center and directed the Sexual Assault Prevention and Treatment program. Since then I have worked in private practice and therapeutic boarding schools. I have found that this private practice and direct service are very rewarding for me, especially at this stage of life.

My goals for you

I believe that goals need to be realistic, attainable, and worthwhile. We want to answer the question: What will a happy and healthy lifestyle look like for this particular person? What does this person want for their mental health? What steps do we need to take to get there.

My first session with you

I am always in partnership, working alongside the client as we move towards better mental health. I also believe that focusing on a whole-person strength-based relationship contributes to a solid base of trust and acceptance. With this solid therapeutic relationship established, you can feel safe to be authentic and vulnerable. The focus of the first session is: Why are you here and is there anything we can do, no matter how small, to help you today?
