Hi there, I'm John!

Charlie is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and additionally holds certification as a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC). Charlie considers it a privilege to work with those who struggle with some of life’s greatest challenges and has great respect for the courage and hard work that is often required to engage in the therapeutic process. Charlie holds both a Master's in Mental Health Counseling and a Master of Divinity from Gardner-Webb University. His background includes working in acute psychiatric care, assessment/diagnoses, and psychotherapy in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He is also experienced working with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, ADHD, personality disorders, and many other acute mental health concerns/diagnoses.

My approach

Charlie considers himself a “tour guide” and often uses cognitive behavioral, client-centered, and/or solution-focused orientations to help you navigate through some of life’s toughest experiences. If another approach is needed, Charlie will work hard to find the therapeutic orientation that works best for you.

My focus

My ideal client is motivated for change because they feel trapped, stuck, and/or repeatedly not getting the outcomes they desire.

My communication style

My clients often comment that I am very comfortable working with them and am extremely non-judgemental. They express feeling understood and valued. As such, they feel safe opening up and sharing the experiences that have led them to counsel.

My journey to mental healthcare

My journey to becoming a counselor began with going through several traumatic, life-defining events that led me to begin the counseling process myself. It was also the catalyst that helped me find the courage to come out as a gay man after being married (with children) for over 20 years. Ultimately, going through the counseling process inspired me to return to graduate school to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.

My goals for you

If I am doing my job well, my clients will eventually not need my services. Visiting for periodic check-ins, "tune-ups," or goal-setting means a client has successfully done the work needed to flourish.

My first session with you

Your first session will be a combination of you sharing what your hopes are for the time that we will spend together and me gathering information that will allow me to provide you with the best care possible.
