Hi there, I'm Phyllis!

Aloha! I’m Phyllis Rooney, a trained Mental Health Counselor, serving children, teens, and adults in Hawaii. This provider resides in Hawaii.

My approach

The most common theoretical approaches I use are drawn from a number of evidence-based treatment orientations, in my work. They include 1. Person-Centered Approach, where the emphasis is placed on the client. I will merely guide your journey of self-discovery and support your finding the answers you've been seeking. After all, you're the expert on your own life! In Addition, in using the humanistic approach my goal is to help individuals develop and gain the insight needed to explore how past and present experiences impact their ability to manage life's daily stressors. Anxiety, feelings of depression, and unresolved traumatic events can often leave you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. I strive to establish a therapeutic relationship that builds on trust, honesty, and compassion in an effort to help individuals manage their emotions and challenges in a positive effective way. 2. Mindfulness Approach, here I will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) methods in collaboration with Mindfulness meditative practices. I will help you in being more aware of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, surroundings, and situations. 3. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), here I will work with you to understand that one's thoughts and behaviors are indeed linked. Therefore by changing one's thoughts, one can change their behavior and as a result, create positive outcomes in their lives. 4. Motivational Interviewing Approach, here I enhance your motivation to change, we will tackle the root issue head by encouraging you to talk about your need for change. The goal is to bring out your intrinsic motivation.

My focus

I love to work with motivated, ready-to-work clients. Clients who are open-minded, flexible, and curious about themselves. I am also very comfortable in working with clients from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community (LGBTQ +). Moreover, I am extremely comfortable working with clients who are depressed, clients who are experiencing debilitating anxiety, and clients who are complex trauma victims.

My communication style

I create a very open-ended and nonjudgemental atmosphere for my clients. I will have respect for their opinions, values, and actions. I will welcome new ideas, and allow my client to think critically and rationally!

My journey to mental healthcare

I will approach goal setting by identifying the client's desired outcomes via a treatment plan. The client and I will develop plans to reach the outcomes. These goals can guide and organize the client's efforts so they can reach their objectives efficiently

My goals for you

I will do a Biopsychosocial Assessment, in which I will assess for biological, psychological, and social factors that can contribute to problems with my clients. I will learn about my clients on multiple levels and better understand their subjective viewpoints. As I result of this type of assessment, I will be able to diagnose and effectively to my clients.

My first session with you
