Mahalo! Hi, my name is Nichole Mathis and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and work with clients in Hawaii via telehealth. I work with adolescents and specialize in parenting, adoption, foster care, anxiety & depression, grief & loss, incarceration, domestic abuse, and military community support using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Attachment Strategies to support clients in making progress toward their goals. This provider resides in Hawaii.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on the needs and preferences of the individual client. The models of therapy I utilize are Attachment therapy and Cognitive Behavioral therapy, as these modalities build a shared understanding of the client's reality and support a way for us to work together as a team to move forward.
My focus
I find my approach is a good fit for working with adolescents, couples, and families of diverse backgrounds who may be experiencing stress, loss, or transition. The symptoms of these experiences may include high levels of anger and conflict that lead to more separation and difficulty coping with daily activities and negatively impact mood. I work together with clients to develop skills and strategies to navigate these stressors and to feel better about the new outcomes they work to create.
My communication style
My communication style is open, personable, and calm. It is my desire that clients feel safe and open to sharing in a non-judgmental space.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey in choosing a career in therapy began when I was teaching. I desired to increase my ability to support students' ability to learn by helping them learn/discover how to regulate their emotions. After increasing my understanding of ways to support kids, I became interested in learning how to support healing in general. I enjoy walking alongside others as they learn and discover ways to empower themselves, overcome the challenges they face, and grow.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting by working with the client to identify short-term and long-term goals that support what the client wants to accomplish in our time together. By building trust in our sessions together, we can effectively make strides toward positive outcomes.
My first session with you
What you can expect from our first session together is spending most of our time discussing how you have been feeling recently and what brought you to therapy. I will ask many questions to increase my understanding of why you may be feeling this way and ways you might be hoping I can be helpful. This session is an opportunity to build a connection and for me to get an idea of where we might go next. It is important to me to give you space to share, so I can increase my understanding of how we can move forward together.
