Hello, my name is Michael Yadao-Evans, and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist from the state of Hawaii. My approach to therapy is very collaborative because I think change is a process we all go through together. I have worked mostly with children from infants to high school, neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Autism), and various substance abuse disorders. This provider resides in Hawaii.
My approach
My main inspiration for therapy is a woman named Virginia Satir. She was called the "Mother of Family Therapy" and had a very patient, nurturing style. I fall under what is called the humanistic or client-centered approach, which tailors therapy to the needs and style of the client. So traditional talk therapy is available, but if expression through other means, such as art, is needed, then I will use that instead.
My focus
I have worked mostly with children from infants to high school, neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Autism), and various substance abuse disorders. I've done a lot of work with managing emotions, coping skills, self-esteem, assertive communication, and behavior modification.
My communication style
I do as much listening as possible and try to interject carefully when needed. I allow the client to lead the discussion (unless they request not to) and focus on providing a nonjudgmental ear. I refrain from giving advice unless specifically requested.
My journey to mental healthcare
I feel that I've always had the natural personality to be a therapist, but I just didn't know it at the time. I like to be a supportive listener to my friends and family, I have tons of patience, and I enjoy helping people and seeing them live happy lives.
My goals for you
Goal setting is a very collaborative process, where we agree on goals together and how to go about achieving those goals.
My first session with you
A first session is generally low intensity. My main focus is to get to know each other better and build rapport. I will also try to gain basic information that can help me understand what issues are going on.
