Hi there, I'm Maria!

Hi! I'm Maria Perdomo-Torres, a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. I offer evidence-based practical tools, combined with a gentle and honest approach, to help clients uncover and transform old coping patterns that no longer serve them, and to improve the relationship they have with themselves, and with others.

My approach

My therapeutic style is compassionate, supportive, and nonjudgmental. I use a client-centered and eclectic approach, meaning that I respect and take into consideration my client's individual needs, values, and beliefs, and I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches that best fit the situation.

My focus

I specialize in helping young and middle-aged adults who struggle with anxiety, self-criticism, and/or difficulty setting boundaries. Other problems I often help with include low self-esteem, perfectionism, impostor syndrome, and burnout.

My communication style

I provide a safe space for my clients and I to freely express our authentic selves. I'm down-to-earth and personable. In the past, clients have told me I exude a calm and kind presence that helps them feel comfortable and quickly build a rapport with me.

My journey to mental healthcare

I’ve always had a keen ability to understand and sense other people’s feelings. My friends and family would often describe me as kind, compassionate, or wise, and from an early age, I truly enjoyed helping others. I first became interested in the field of psychology after taking a class in psychopathology during my undergraduate studies, which sparked my curiosity for understanding the intricacies of the human mind. Later when I joined the Army, I had the opportunity to choose mental health specialist as my occupation, and I took it! While serving in the military, I gained experience working in various mental health settings, including inpatient psychiatry, outpatient child and adolescent mental health, and substance abuse clinics. This experience helped solidify my path. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Psychology and then went on to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. To become a licensed therapist, I also completed over 2000 hours of supervised clinical experience and passed the national ASWB clinical exam. Atlhough this was many years ago, the learning is ongoing though, as psychotherapy is a fascinating and ever-evolving field. There is always exciting research, new treatment approaches, or theories worth learning more about. I am often reading books and articles, attending professional conferences, webinars, and trainings, to stay up to date with new developments in the field. Having something new to learn and someone new to help every day keeps me engaged, challenged, and motivated. That is why I continue doing this work.

My goals for you

We collaborate on identifying goals together, taking into account client's priorities, "pain points," and perceived readiness for change.

My first session with you

A casual "getting to know" you conversation where I might ask lots of questions, listen attentively, and occasionally take quick notes to remind myself of topics we might want to focus on or re-visit in future sessions.
