Hi, I'm Jeffrey Kishner, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, specializing in addressing challenges related to sex, relationships, diverse identities, and sexual/relational practices such as LGBTQ, kink, and polyamory. Through a collaborative approach, I empower clients to navigate feelings, confront self-limiting beliefs, and align their lives with their values without dictating solutions.
My approach
In my therapeutic approach, I mainly utilize client-centered methods, elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), relational psychodynamics, and mindfulness techniques. I tailor my approach to fit the individual needs of each client, providing a supportive environment to explore their emotions, behaviors, and belief systems.
My focus
The majority of my clients are young adults who seek help with issues related to sex or relationships, including relationship ambivalence. I'm skilled in discussing various aspects of sexuality, including performance issues and kink dynamics. I also treat mood disorders like anxiety and depression. Striving for cultural competence, I'm open and prepared to discuss race with clients of color.
My communication style
My communication style is relaxed yet engaged. I believe in creating a safe space where clients can express themselves openly and explore their concerns. I view it as the client's responsibility to introduce topics for exploration, while I serve as a guide, posing probing questions and reflecting on their feelings.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started my journey as a therapist during my freshman year in college, serving as a peer counselor. After periods of studying cognitive psychology and working in digital media, I realized my true calling was to directly and positively impact people's lives through counseling. What continues to drive me is the joy of forming deep connections with my clients and aiding them in overcoming self-limiting beliefs, healing past wounds, and minimizing self-defeating behaviors.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting collaboratively, working with clients to identify their goals for therapy. I encourage them to envision how their life would change if they achieve these goals and what measurable progress might look like. Regular check-ins are a key part of this process, allowing us to track progress and continually assess the client-therapist relationship.
My first session with you
In the first session, I devote most of the time to understanding the client's current life situation, their motivation for seeking therapy, and their therapeutic goals. I provide an assessment of the situation and discuss how I can assist. The session concludes with a discussion about the therapeutic process, confidentiality, and privacy policies.
