Hello, my name is Dr. Katrina Pinkney. I am a licensed professional counselor and hold two national counselor certifications. I use an integrative approach to pull from intrapersonal, interpersonal, and supportive therapies.
My approach
I commonly use cognitive therapy, narrative, humanistic, client-centered, supportive, strengths-based, solution-focused, brief therapy, Adlerian, multicultural, and existential.
My focus
I typically see adults (18-55 years) struggling with life stressors and transitions. Common conditions include stress, adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, relational discord with intimate partners, family, friends, and colleagues, obsessive thoughts and acts, interpersonal relational discord due to childhood trauma, adult psychological trauma, financial and food insecurity, emotional inhibition, lack of empathy, intimacy issues, problems with adulting, identity issues, low self-esteem, low confidence, and low self-worth.
My communication style
I am a straightforward counselor who challenges clients to promote growth. I typically do not sugar-coat or fluff. However, I will ask if you want my feedback and opinions. I also do not use psychological jargon.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was driven to the work by wanting to make a difference. Growing up, I had close family members who suffered from debilitating chronic mental health conditions. They sought treatment within the mental healthcare system but received poor-quality care and encountered insensitive providers. I knew I could do better to help those with mental health needs by treating them with respect and dignity, while also helping them to acquire the quality of life they deserved.
My goals for you
The goal-setting process is mutual. Typically, I'd ask about the client's expectations regarding participation in therapy/counseling during the intake session to establish initial treatment goals. Depending on the clients ' needs, goals can be modified throughout therapy.
My first session with you
The first session is an intake in which I will ask the client to talk about what brings them to seek counseling/therapy. I will also inquire about major areas of the client's life (e.g., work, social, financial, family, substance use, legal, and education), using holistic and motivational interview approaches. The client can expect me to ask several questions, but I will make it conversational.
