Hello! My name is Brianna Jakubiak and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Dakota. I work to help people better understand themselves and how to create the life they want. I think it is an honor to get to hear an individual's story and be a part of it.
My approach
My theoretical approach differs slightly depending on who I am working with, but I pull primarily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I work to help people gain awareness of their own patterns in order to start the process of changing those thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
My focus
I have worked in a community mental health agency, so I have a history of working with a very wide variety of individuals and symptoms. Now, I most commonly work with people that struggle with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and relational concerns.
My communication style
I strive to make a space that feels as comfortable as possible, while also being honest and telling you what you need to hear. I believe a therapist should be more than just a wall, so while you have plenty of space to share, I point out helpful information to help you better understand yourself. I work to be nonjudgmental, kind, authentic, and caring.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always been interested in listening to other people tell their stories; I think it is just amazing to be able to hear about the things people have been through. When I was in college I had an internship opportunity that sparked the idea of being a therapist in order to actually help those people with the problems they're having. I absolutely love listening to people, trying to understand them, and then helping them understand themselves.
My goals for you
I love to discuss goals in the beginning of our work together so we both have an understanding of what we're going to be focusing on. I think it is important to refer back to those goals and change them frequently. Also, I find it can sometimes be helpful for the client and I to create goals of steps to take or tools to try in-between sessions so progress continues even when we're not face-to-face.
