My name is Melanie Shands and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I am a Registered Play Therapist and EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist. I work with youth and adults in Missouri to help them reach their goals and improve their mental health.
My approach
My approach to therapy is, first and foremost, client centered. After determining the goals and individual needs of the client, we will discuss the treatment modality that fits best. I use various modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Play Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, and Solution Focused Therapy.
My focus
I believe every person has the ability to heal and improve their mental health when provided with a therapist who is invested in their success and takes the time to teach skills and process feelings, thoughts, and life events. I enjoy working with children and teens, as well as adults in all stages of life. I am trained in a variety of methods to help clients heal from trauma and learn how to take control of their healing.
My communication style
My communication style reflects the unconditional positive regard I have for my clients. I am open, honest, empathetic, non-judgmental, and caring. It is important to me that my clients feel accepted, heard, and free to be themselves.
My journey to mental healthcare
My interest in mental health began when one of my children was given a mental health diagnosis. The process of finding care for him was daunting and I had to educate myself quickly. I began working in this field to help other children and parents find the support they needed. The more I learned, the more my passion for helping people heal grew. I believe everyone has the ability to better their lives when given the right tools and I am honored to be a part of that journey.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is to work closely with the client to determine their strengths, needs, and what they want to achieve during our time together. I help clients determine their goals and discuss steps that we will take together to help meet those goals.
My first session with you
First sessions can feel overwhelming for someone seeking therapy so I work to ensure clients are treated with kindness, openness, and caring. Together, we will assess your strengths, needs, well-being, and start talking about your goals. The relationship between therapist and client is very important so the client can trust their needs are being met and we will begin developing that relationship during the initial visit.
