Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth Butler. I have been a licensed clinical psychologist based in California since 2007. My focus is simple: providing tools and a safe space to help my clients make progress in their lives and feel better.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on the needs of the client. I most frequently use psychodynamic, attachment-based, and mindfulness theories to help us build a shared understanding of the client’s reality. This allows us to work together in charting a new path forward.
My focus
I have over 20 years of experience working with adults in group and individual settings, helping them navigate life challenges that cause anxiety, stress, depression, and interpersonal difficulties. I have treated emotion dysregulation, anger management problems, boundary-setting issues, and core identity issues. My goal is to build and increase the skills necessary for adaptive ways to cope that we all need to feel better about ourselves.
My communication style
I have a direct communication style and listen without judgment. I will always be on your side, even when you're not. I'll help you navigate through existing thought patterns and behaviors no longer serving you, and help you build fresh approaches leading to symptom relief and more positive outcomes.
My journey to mental healthcare
I became a psychologist because I have always been fascinated by people’s stories. Once we know our story, all of our behaviors make sense, and we can empower ourselves by taking charge of the narrative. I have always been drawn to helping people through difficult times and love seeing folks become the best versions of themselves.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. This starts by building trust and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. Over time, we’ll work together to set goals, track progress, and create adaptive skills to manage life’s ongoing stressors.
My first session with you
Our first session will be focused on how you’ve been feeling recently, and me answering any questions you have about the therapeutic process. I will also be asking questions to better understand you. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. Each individual is different, and I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you moving forward.
