My focus

I tend to work best with people who feel under the thumb of life. Is there an -ism that has beaten you up? Are relentless standards and rules telling you that you have not yet measured up, and if you would just try a little bit more...? Are you feeling like it just works out that you are the victim?

My approach

I tend to ask questions with a huge bias in your favor. I want to know how you have made it this far. I'm curious about the steps you've taken along the way that have helped, even a little bit. How have you survived? When you think of a better life, what do you imagine?

My communication style

Many problems that bring people to therapy are serious, and some cannot stand to be laughed at. So we can try a playful approach or live differently—rather than combating issues and forcing them into submission, we can explore a preferred way you'd like to live that we can help unfold.

My journey to mental healthcare

Wandering in the public library stacks as a teenager, I found a book on psychotherapy. I was hooked on the discussions the therapists and the clients were having--nothing like my family. I've known since then what I wanted to be, and now look at where I've gotten to.

My goals for you

Well, mostly by talking about them and trying experiments. What worked? What worked even a little bit so we can grow that little bit into something more? What works in one domain of your life that maybe we can try in another domain of your life? Let's not try to reinvent the wheel if a wheel already exists.

Our first session

I like to ask lots of questions. I'm hoping a fair mix of them are new to you and get you thinking of how well you have done so far, despite terrible opposition. But I don't want all of our discussion to be about problems. I can ask about your life when the problems are not around.
