Hi there, I'm Richard!

I am a counselor who works with individuals, couples, and families navigating a range of mental health concerns.

My focus

My experience has included all types of client needs. However, my focus has been on mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, anxiety as a disorder that has seen a significant increase in recent years, ADHD, and couples or families.

My approach

I use an integrated approach to therapy, which means I use one or more therapy models, depending on the client's circumstances and needs. For example, if I am working with a couple, I will use a couples therapy model; if I am working with someone who has experienced trauma, I will use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to help them recover.

My communication style

My greatest effort is the client's sense of feeling safe. Then I want to know what the client hopes to accomplish through therapy, and my efforts are to help them accomplish their goal.

My journey to mental healthcare

I worked for some years as a chemist, which I have often described as fun. There came a time for me to change career paths, and mental health counseling has been a great opportunity to help people by getting to know them and focusing on what they see as vital changes they want to make.

My goals for you

I simply ask them why they have come to counseling, and I may ask what they want their world to look like as a result of counseling.

Our first session

The first session focuses on the client's needs and expectations. As a therapist, I want to get to know the client, which means asking some questions about them and their life events. More importantly, it means I listen to the client. Their voice matters to me, and I want to hear what they are saying.
