Hi there, I'm Vivian!

My name is Vivian E. Johnson, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. I predominately utilize the psychodynamic approach. I work with individuals, families, and couples experiencing anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors, relationship challenges, self-esteem issues, and trauma.

My approach

The psychodynamic therapeutic approach is what I use to assist clients to gain more insight into their lives and present-day problems and issues. I help clients recognize their recurring unhelpful thought, emotional and behavioral patterns, and the defense mechanisms they've developed to avoid distress and cope with stress. This insight may allow them to begin changing those patterns and develop more helpful and healthier ways to cope with life stressors. I also utilize the Gottman Method approach to work with couples to improve their communication and increase the intimacy, affection, and respect in their marriage.

My focus

I work with individuals, families, and couples. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors, relationship challenges, self-esteem issues, and trauma.

My communication style

I strive to create a safe non-judgmental space in order to build a rapport and therapeutic alliance. I utilize active reflective listening and open-ended questions as I gather information from the client's history and story.

My journey to mental healthcare

I have always been intrigued by the ways our life stories and experiences shape how we see and feel about ourselves and the world. My curiosity peaked when I studied early childhood development. As a preschool teacher, and later, an art teacher to elementary and middle school-aged children, I worked closely with the children and their families. My experience in the classroom inspired me to become a therapist. My first love, however, is art making. I enjoy using colors, lights, and darks to create images. In the same way, I enjoy using art materials and tools, I enjoy using and teaching clients the therapeutic tools and techniques to help them access their inner wisdom, increase their awareness and to identify and work through barriers and issues to create fuller lives and relationships.

My goals for you

Once my client has been able to identify what they want to change in their lives, I use the SMART goal-setting format: We start with a Specific goal linked to an issue or thought; the goal will be Measurable to track progress; there will be a clear action the client can take to be Accountable; the action will be Realistic; and Timely, so the client can see progress between sessions.

My first session with you

Throughout the whole treatment experience, I will always provide a safe space and time for the client to share their story, their concerns, issues, hopes, and dreams. I will meet the client where they are and assist the client to identify what they want to address. Then, I will work with the client to set concrete, measurable goals, and action plans that they can track as they move toward their goals.
