Hello, I'm Kathleen O'Neill and I am a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. My approach to therapy involves exploring concrete steps that you can take to address your challenges and achieve your goals. I have experience working with individuals struggling with substance use, mood disorders, relational issues, trauma, and anxiety.
My approach
My approach to therapy is to utilize a solution-focused and client-centered framework that prioritizes the client's autonomy, strengths, and resources. I find a Cognitive Behavioral approach is useful for many different disorders. I also trend towards using Motivational Interviewing, and practical problem-solving.
My focus
I am comfortable working with individuals struggling with substance use, mood disorders, relational issues, trauma, and anxiety. I am experienced with adults aged 18 and over through the senior population.
My communication style
In sessions, I will listen attentively to your concerns, validate your experiences and emotions, while kindly guiding you toward exploring constructive solutions. I enjoy using humor, and a clear but kind communication style.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have been a practicing therapist for nearly 20 years. I've learned that I enjoy watching people figure things out and I've learned that the majority of people know the answers to their problems, and know what they need to do to get where they want to be. I've learned that odd as it is, sometimes a relationship with a perfect stranger, is the one that moves them along.
My goals for you
Treatment goals are determined by the client. For clients that express ambivalence about goal setting, that will be the place we start.
My first session with you
Clients can expect a conversation that educates them about my services, treatment approach, and what I can and cannot do. Clients will be asked to share their reasons for seeking treatment, what they expect from treatment (what they believe therapy is like), and what goals they have for themselves.
