My name is Laura Vogel, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My role as your therapist is to help you connect with your True Self, find the solutions to your problems, and walk through hardships gracefully by asking you the right questions and equipping you with the necessary tools. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation of my work, as well as approaching your healing journey using a mind-body approach. My goal is to help you develop a positive and functioning relationship with yourself and others.
My approach
My deep-seated belief that clients have all the answers they need within themselves dictates how I practice therapy. Most humans are doing the best they can with what they have and sometimes try and find peace and safety in self-destructive ways. Positive intentions to protect oneself from pain, with negative consequences. I use a cognitive-somatic approach, which is therapist speak for incorporating both the mind and body during healing. I am trained in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or EFT tapping, which is a form of somatic desensitization that calms the brain, body, and mind so that you can start to work with a regulated nervous system and actually heal, instead of spinning in place with no results.
My focus
I typically work with clients who are struggling with anxiety and depression, clients who feel angry at themselves and the world. Clients struggling with an inability to motivate themselves to just DO THE THING(s). Many times this will be people that seem to have everything together on the outside, but on the inside, they feel like they are drowning. I am comfortable treating clients with childhood trauma (both big T and little T; if you don't know what that means, ask me during the first session!). Trauma can be seen on a continuum, and many of us have endured trauma in our lives.
My communication style
Because I'm someone who believes in guiding clients back to their authentic selves, you can also expect authenticity from me. I am professional, but not robotic. I have done the work myself. Most things that I suggest to you are things I have done myself. I practice with the belief -borrowed from Irvin D. Yalom, M.D. - that you and I are "fellow travelers." We are all in this together.
My first session with you
During the first session, I will be assessing whether you and I are an appropriate fit. I will do this through conversation, as well as pointed questions about the issues you are bringing to the table. I will determine whether your story fits my level of competency and expertise, and we will make the decision together by the end of the first session. Mostly, expect A LOT of questions during the first session!
