Hi there, I'm Michael!

Michael F. Stample PhD, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (CA MFC34008). I work extensively with individual adults, couples, and families. Primary expertise in mood and anxiety disorders, OCD, dual diagnosis, LGBTQ+, and transgender healthcare.

My approach

I work comfortably with psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and other evidence-based therapies. My early training included an internship at the Jung Institute of Los Angeles, so I might be called "Post-Jungian" in my overall view of modern therapeutic practice. In essence, my approach is relaxed and conversational.

My focus

I mostly work with adults over age 17 or 18, through the later years. While psychiatric diagnoses have their uses, I prefer to see my clients as dealing with "problems of living."

My communication style

Therapy is a conversation, not a "treatment." I believe my clients see me as an equal partner in the conversation while expecting me to know a few things, beyond the ordinary, which may be helpful.

My journey to mental healthcare

People, their thoughts, motivations, and behavior have always intrigued me. I'm fascinated by the problems we (mostly) create for ourselves. In my youth, I discovered the work of psychiatrist Carl G. Jung, and the breadth and depth of his work set my expectations for effective psychotherapy, to the present day.

My goals for you

Client goal setting is the foundation for judging whether progress is being made, i.e., whether the therapy is actually helping.

My first session with you

A reasonably clear definition of immediate challenges/problems, and an overview of some possible solutions. The first session is about establishing a mutual comfort level, and trust.
