Hi, my name is David Bonfanti, LMFT. I enjoy getting to know my clients, hearing them share their stories. I've found that being a better listener is more effective than having something to say. I certainly do have things to say, but it really helps to hear a client's perspective of the problem(s) they are experiencing or have suffered with. I invite and guide others to decide the best course of action for their lives.
My approach
CBT, Strength based, Solution-Focused, Psychodynamic. I want to help others improve how they say what they say. We can not change the past, but we can make today count, as," it is never to late to be what you might have been." (Mary Ann Evans, AKA George Eliot).
My focus
I Prefer to work with anyone who is willing to do the work needed to effect the change the seek. I enjoy couples therapy and working with older populations, and those who need to manage chronic medical conditions. I prefer to work with adults aged 30 and above.
My communication style
Above all else, I employ non-judgemental acceptance. I try to create a warm environment for others to feel secure in order to do the work needed to effect change.
My journey to mental healthcare
I needed to go to therapy in order to change and understand some things in my life. Therapy was part of that process, and it changed my life for the better. My therapist once said to me, " David you can't give what you don't have." So I then thought, " I had better have more." In addition, therapy was mandated by the state of California at the time for those seeking a psychotherapist license. I really worked hard in therapy. Being able to change is such a gift.
My goals for you
Change is difficult, internal change is normally a process, rather than a one-time event. I think it best to set realistic and obtainable goals. This is why I say, " Progress not perfection." Therapy takes time because we talk about difficult subject matter and as we know, bad things happen to us sometimes. " the problem is not the problem, the reaction to the problem is the problem."
My first session with you
I like to lay the groundwork needed to build the therapeutic framework to effect change. I like to provide psychoeducation about the therapeutic process and obtain background information.
