My name is Genie Lee, LMFT and I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and children. My focus currently is on adults individually and in couples therapy. My approach is that each of us has the strength inside to solve whatever problems we face and I am here to help you figure it all out.
My approach
My approach to providing therapy is that I work hard to get to know you as an individual and as a couple and find out what you want in our time together. I use mostly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, along with strength-based and supportive therapy. When working with couples, I also use couples therapy, sometimes Imago Couples Therapy., This is your time and so you get to decide how we spend it.
My focus
I mostly work with individual adults or couples who have issues that interfere with their relationships, work, and life. These issues include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, codependency, communication problems, intimacy problems, extended family issues, difficulty setting boundaries, problems with trust, alcohol/drug abuse, anger, past trauma, ADHD, stress, feeling overwhelmed, grief, aging, life transitions, emotional/physical/verbal abuse and more.
My communication style
I am the type of therapist who takes the therapy session at your pace, answering any questions you may have. There isn't any topic that we cannot talk about. I am gentle but will be direct and honest with you, and hope that you will also. I do not judge and work hard to remain objective. I am very supportive and I focus on your strengths and give a lot of encouragement.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was an elementary teacher for 14 years before I became a therapist. I sometimes saw students who struggled with their emotions and clearly would have benefited from seeing a therapist. I began to feel that I could do more as a therapist. Also, I have always been intrigued by how the human mind works, how people think, and feelings. I also experienced trauma as a child, with no one to talk to about it until I was an adult. My experiences in my own therapy were so positive that I wanted to be able to provide the same for others.
My goals for you
During goal setting, I will talk to you about what is important to you and what you want to work on in therapy. Then I will ask you to prioritize them, so that we can develop the Treatment Plan.
My first session with you
You should expect our first session together to be a full assessment and treatment plan. I will go over what confidentiality is and the exceptions. I will introduce myself and give you an idea of what to expect during the assessment and treatment plan. You can ask questions at any time during this session and I will take the time to answer them. I will get as much info from you as I can so that I can assess what your needs are and how best to work with you. In the treatment plan, we will develop goals to work on during our time together, goals which you will help develop.
