Hello, my name is Eric Copeland, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Long Beach, California, and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in treating anxiety, depression, and substance misuse, using Cognitive Behavioral therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help my clients live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
My approach
My approach to therapy is individualized based on the needs of my clients. I draw from my training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as these modalities provide a helpful framework for identifying and processing thoughts and feelings in a way that helps guide value-driven goals. I also like to draw upon Mindfulness techniques that can help reduce stress and anxiety.
My focus
I've worked with a variety of clients and typically see adult men and women of all ages. My training covers all types of diagnoses but I am most experienced in treating people with anxiety, depression, and substance misuse. In all cases, I can help people learn healthy coping mechanisms and ways to unhook from overwhelming thoughts and feelings in order to be more focused and live a meaningful life. I really find it helpful to talk about self-compassion as a way to provide relief for those with depression and anxiety.
My communication style
My communication style is calm, respectful, and at times, playful. I seek to create an authentic and judgment-free experience where people can openly talk about what’s on their heart, soul and mind. Clients often tell me how natural our sessions feel and I find that to be important.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have found a lot of fulfillment in helping others in different capacities whether it was being an outdoor education instructor, working in a special education setting, or working for various non-profits that provided aid to the marginalized. My personal strengths are geared toward listening, being empathetic, and caring. The support I have received from others in regard to my own mental health propels me to continue to learn about psychology and provide support for others. I'm driven to create genuine and authentic therapy experiences for others.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting begins with careful listening and then collaboration to make the goals specific, obtainable, and measurable. Goals are very important because they define what you want to accomplish in the future and can help establish action items to work on. In addition to goals, I can help clients understand their values which help guide their goals. If the clients don't like the word 'goal', I find that a better word is 'intention'.
My first session with you
In our first session, I want to build trust and rapport by listening and asking thoughtful questions in order to understand what your concerns are. Because therapy can ask people to talk about painful things, clients can expect a lot of empathy and compassion from me.
