My name is Sarah Cary, LMFT, and through my work, I've learned it's the empathy and trust found in a strong patient-therapist relationship that has a large impact on healing. I've worked in many clinical settings but I specialize in helping people impacted by trauma as well as those looking to build solid relationships. I also have an additional focus on adolescent mental health.
My approach
I view therapy sessions as a time for us to collaborate on promoting healing and growth in your life. The theories I use are psychodynamic, which means I look at how early experiences contribute to a person's present ways of seeing the world. I also use attachment theory, which looks at how we bond with one another. Finally, I like to work on some brain-based knowledge and information where it might be helpful.
My focus
I work with adults and older teenagers as well as couples. I have specialized training and experience treating people who've experienced trauma, bipolar/mood disorders, and relationship issues.
My communication style
I'm deeply curious and love to hear people's stories unfold. I strive to create an atmosphere of acceptance and curiosity about you and your life that we can share as we explore together how to best meet your goals.
My journey to mental healthcare
It was the combination of having experienced great therapy myself as a young person and being very curious and interested in human nature and people's stories. I am fascinated by how we are all put together and by the incredible potential for growth and change I believe we all possess. I feel incredibly honored when someone invites me to take part in their growth and healing process.
My first session with you
The first session is a time for me to ask more questions than I normally would so that I can understand whether I might be able to be of help to you. It's also a time for you to ask questions about me so that you can get to know me and the way I do therapy a little better. Then, if you decide you'd like to work with me, we come up with a plan for your therapy moving forward.
