Hi there, I'm Maria!

Maria Alfaro, LMFT. I can offer you a healing experience that is sensitive to your strengths as well as your pain. I believe in respecting clients and their intrinsic wisdom and can help you gain a joyful peaceful life. I specialize in trauma, sexual abuse, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, victims of crime, and post-traumatic disorders.

My approach

I am a trauma-competent therapist and can guide families through understanding issues related to their experiences. I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Psychodynamic approaches to help you have a better understanding of the underlying issues.

My focus

I specialize in helping teens, adults, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds heal with an attachment-focused, strengths-based, and non-judgmental lens. I'm bilingual (English/Spanish) and understand the acculturation problem some people experience in their lives. In addition, I can provide assistance with bariatric surgery recovery process and help you understand the new you.

My communication style

I have a kind, sincere approach to counseling and we can work together to help you sort through the issues bothering you. I want to join you on your journey towards healing and wholeness.

My journey to mental healthcare

When I began this journey as a therapist, it began when I took a psychology class in college and fell in love with it. The more classes I took, the better I felt it was my calling. As soon as I was able to practice, it felt like I was in my field. Knowing all the benefits clients obtain from therapy it's so fulfilling. Especially when you see the client making progress and seeing things from a different perspective, it is so encouraging and motivating to continue doing this work.

My goals for you

The main goal is to ask you what you hope to gain from therapy. We then will work collaboratively to gain deeper insight into yourself and your relationships, build on your strengths, and develop skills that further personal growth and lead to a more enriching life.

My first session with you

We will start the therapeutic relationship immediately. I want you to feel that you have a safe space where you can express your feelings, thoughts, and needs in an environment where you feel truly understood and supported. I typically explore childhood to have a better understanding of who you are. Collaboratively we can work on getting to know you, unpack the root causes of your distress, and help you find successful ways to cope with life’s difficult challenges.
