Hello, my name is Nancy Metcalf. I have been licensed in the state of CA as an LCSW since 2000. I am comfortable with many different populations and modalities. I have an acceptance approach and most clients find me to be very nonjudgmental. My interventions tend to focus on skill-building and cognitive therapy.
My approach
I pull in DBT skills as often as possible, cognitive restructuring, chain analysis, and behavioral activation. I am very client-centered.
My focus
I have experience working with older adults and aging issues, women's issues, self-esteem, and adjustment issues as well as adults dealing with both chronic medical and mental health issues.
My communication style
The feedback I get most often is that clients feel accepted working with me. They find me approachable and relatable. I do incorporate a sense of humor into my work as well as I find it adds to the therapeutic relationship and in creating a safe working environment to explore thoughts and ideas. I am open to feedback.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always been a helper type person, working as a Big Sister throughout school and volunteering at women's shelters and Rape Crisis programs. I love helping clients feel happier and more satisfied with themselves and their lives.
My goals for you
Week one generally focuses on identifying both long-term and short-term goals. I also try to understand clients' expectations of therapy and how they will know that they are feeling better.
My first session with you
The focus is on understanding the client's present life and stressors as well as developing working goals. Further sessions will focus on skills building and understanding how core beliefs developed in childhood are affecting the client's current thoughts and feelings
