Hi there, I'm Michael!

Hi, my name is Michael Willis, Sr. and I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. My base is in Los Angeles; however, I work with clients throughout the state of California via Telehealth.

My approach

My approach to the client is generally organic. The theoretical orientation that I use is specific to the client's need and the therapeutic alliance that has been built. Though I am a proponent of humanistic therapies (namely: Person-Centered, Existential, and Narrative Therapy). I also wield strength in working with Cognitive Behavior Therapy when warranted. My aim is to use a strength-based approach to help clients achieve their goals.

My focus

I have had good success working with clients that have suffered from Adverse Childhood Experiences, Acute Stress, Trauma, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. I'm keen on helping clients build toolboxes filled with coping strategies that they can utilize during times of distress, helping to build an internal locus of control as they actuate toward potential.

My communication style

My communication style is open and present. I am an active listener who displays respect and absolute positive regard for the client. A therapy session is an office where there is a no-judgment zone. In this office, the client is the expert on their life story, and I (the therapist) is the learner. Together we will gain insights that will lead to solutions that will help the client to surmount their presenting issues.

My journey to mental healthcare

A desire to make a difference for those that grew up in impoverished neighborhoods and in marginalized societies who would suffer Adverse Childhood Experiences, leading to a plethora of other issues, (low self-value, low self-esteem, stunted emotional development, etc.), fueled my interest in becoming a clinical therapist. I am driven by a desire to effect change that will cause some to actuate to a higher level of functioning.

My goals for you

My goal is to help you reach the goals that you have set for yourself around Health & Wellness through therapeutic interventions using a strengths-based approach.

My first session with you

The goal of our first session is rapport building, goal setting, and treatment planning. You can expect to get to know me as a therapist and I hope to better know you as a person. I want to hear your perception of the presenting problem. I would like to understand your short and long-term goals. Together we will develop a treatment plan to work toward objectives that will lead to the goals that you have set. I will attempt to answer any questions that you might have. Finally, we will schedule the next session.
