My name is Joshua Siskin and I have been a licensed marriage and family therapist (#48666) in California for fifteen years. I focus on improving daily functioning and fulfillment in all areas of life, helping clients cope with anxiety, depression, and low self-worth. A relationship of mutual respect and appreciation between counselor and client is the key to successful therapy and I trust we can develop a relationship of this kind as I assist you in becoming the person you were meant to be.
My approach
My approach is solution focused. I am not primarily concerned with how or why your present challenge developed, but rather will assist you in finding a way forward. I hope to elicit and reinforce your positive attributes and competencies and help you to access your inner strength. My goal is that you should feel better about yourself and life in general with the completion of our session together. Your ability to change or improve your situation depends on your desire to do so. My job is to awaken that desire within you.
My focus
I work with clients struggling in their relationships, at their jobs, or with their own insecurities. I am comfortable treating a wide variety of issues, from anxiety brought on by stress or uncertainty to depression that comes from being stuck in the past or overwhelmed by present circumstances.
My communication style
I do not consider myself to be a psychologist or therapist in the conventional sense. My approach is customized and personal. I will talk to you like an acquaintance whom, by chance, I am seated next to on a plane. I will show curiosity about who you are, your work and what you do for fun. I will inquire about your creative pursuits and your dreams, professionally and otherwise.
My journey to mental healthcare
I owned my own business for thirty years and at the end of that time found myself speaking to my clients about their life challenges and personal issues. I thought I was helping them make positive changes in their lives even while I was burning out from running a business. I sold my business and began a master's program in psychological counseling and started working in a clinic as an intern and then privately upon completion of my degree.
My goals for you
Goal setting is completely collaborative. I encourage clients to write down three major goals in therapy and help them to clarify these goals and what the desired outcomes will be once they are achieved.
My first session with you
A few moments of getting acquainted. I will invite you to ask any questions you about myself and the therapeutic process. I will ask what brings you to counseling and talk about your therapeutic goals.
