My communication style

We can be overly critical of ourselves. Sometimes we have good reasons for feeling sad or disappointed. If we can be compassionate about being human, have real feelings, and stay open to learning, most distress can be resolved. I try to be casual and rarely use jargon. I won't focus on a diagnosis unless it's helpful.

My journey to mental healthcare

I worked in education and policy, helping open schools and pass laws to support children. What was missing was addressing mental health needs. I often found myself at a loss when a child experienced trauma, had a death in the family, or had parents divorcing. That's when my journey into mental health began.

My goals for you

It's really important that you let me know what you'd like to work on. Sometimes the presenting problem isn't the actual or most urgent one. We work together to identify goals for each session. Sometimes that means developing an action plan, and sometimes that means decompressing from a rough time.

Our first session

The first session is mostly about gathering important information. What are the issues, who is involved, and what are your goals? I'll be doing a lot of listening and asking follow-up questions and beginning to develop a plan with you to address your needs.
