Greetings! My start point with counseling was personal, beginning with individual counseling and then couple counseling with my wife. It was very helpful and I decided I would like to help others as I was helped and have been doing so for over 30 years.
My approach
I started out in 1989 using a humanistic approach that worked well with individual clients but was not able to find an approach that worked well with couples or families until being introduced to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in 2001. The MBTI provides information on general traits and characteristics known to be common for individuals with their MBTI type score. This information has been consistently accurate and helps clients better understand and accept the way they naturally are, as well as to better understand and accept those that naturally perceive and prioritize in a manner that differs from their own.
My focus
I work well with teens and adults, couples and families, whose primary challenge is a breakdown in communication, usually manifesting itself in never ending debates over who is right and who is not, that preclude meaningful resolution.
My communication style
Hopefully safe! I tend to be non-judgmental, seeking to understand rather than judge.
My journey to mental healthcare
My first experience with counseling was as a client having difficulty asserting myself in personal relationships and not knowing what I wanted to do career wise. I benefited from and enjoyed the counseling experience. I have always felt a sense of meaning and purpose when helping others feel better so it is no surprise that I ended up doing the same for others.
My goals for you
Goals are determined by the nature of a client's issues and their natural pace at addressing them. Structured clients will like a more structured approach and open ended clients a more open ended approach.
My first session with you
If a crisis is not present requiring immediate assistance in managing, I provide my individual, couple or family client with information from the MBTI Questionnaire they returned to me prior to session on each one's MBTI profile type. This is usually accurate and, since the info is non-judgmental, others present tend to agree to self as well as others info, setting the stage for self-understanding and acceptance as well as increased understanding and acceptance of those that naturally differ from them.
