Hello, my name is Bob Hickman, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I want to share the great pleasure I have felt working with children, teens, families, and adults over the years.
My approach
My approach is strength-based, calling upon your capacities and talents, and solution-focused, helping you find solutions to challenges that work for you. I use cognitive behavioral therapy strategies to support the development of a realistic, positive, and affirming view of yourself and your capacity to manage the challenges in your life. I work with individuals, couples, and families, building upon what is working and identifying and eliminating self-defeating and ineffective thoughts and behaviors.
My focus
I work with individuals, couples, and families who suffer from Anxiety, Depression, Divorce, Family Conflict, Life Transitions, Parenting, Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum, Relationship Issues, Self-esteem, Stress, Suicidal Ideation, and Grief.
My communication style
I am empathic and direct as I work to understand and facilitate the exploration of important concerns and needs and how to address them.
My journey to mental healthcare
I brought a combination of education, training, clinical skills, and lived experience as a son, husband, father, and stepfather. I earned my Master of Science (MS) in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from United States International University in 1981. From January 1979 to May 1981, I completed my clinical hours for licensure.
My goals for you
We will work together to learn and enact effective ways to overcome the barriers that limit your ability to find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
My first session with you
We will focus on building rapport as I gain an understanding of your needs and concerns and their background influences before collaborating with you to develop a relevant plan of action.
