My name is Christine Shield, LCSW. I use CBT, gradual exposure and some DBT, (all with or without integrated Biblical or spiritual approaches) to women ages 18-62. I am a caring and non-judgmental person, who is enthusiastic about helping women with PTSD, anxiety/panic disorders, depression, and many other issues. I actively collaborate with clients, regardless of their faith, and happily incorporate spirituality and holistic practices when requested.
My approach
In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy (gradual exposure for anxiety disorders), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Biblical approaches to mental health and illness, I also provide Psychodynamic and Art therapy. I provide an active, structured, but flexible, approach to quickly building needed coping tools to reduce symptoms. With PTSD and panic symptoms, we build an individualized plan for your specific symptoms, to help with emotions, thoughts, behavior, and physical responses to reminders of past or recent traumatic events.
My focus
My specialties include women, anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, panic attacks, conflict resolution, relationship issues, parenting skills, Biblical counseling, spiritual growth, balancing career and personal life, life and career coaching, and psychoeducation. I use gradual exposure to help traumatic memories become filed correctly, to reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being and functioning.
My communication style
I have a warm and engaging therapy style, a calm demeanor, and a non-judgmental approach to client care. I actively listen and validate people's concerns, while gently offering alternative ways to approach thoughts, feelings, and behavior. I follow up each session with a summary of what we worked on together.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have a bachelor’s degree in fine art. I stumbled upon a job in a psychiatric hospital and loved it. This led me to pursue a master’s in social work. My faith, passion for helping people, and love of psychology, social work, language, and culture continue to grow.
My goals for you
I use a collaborative approach to listen to your concerns and assist you with setting goals and finding ways to make those goals specific, measurable, and achievable, when possible. We then “check in” each session, briefly, to track progress, and adjust as needed.
My first session with you
I like to take time in the first session, to listen to each person's story. Like any relationship, it is important to have a good fit and connection with the therapist a client is working with. I listen with warmth and empathy and ask questions that help determine what type of treatment might be most helpful.
