Hi there, I'm Mary!
Change for the better is good. Yet any change is difficult. Many of us do well at managing our lives by mitigating our problems with justifications like, "It's not that bad...things could be worse." Until one day, the epiphany hits, and we realize that we need help.
My focus
I will always be honest with my clients. If I meet someone who might be better served with a different therapist, I will help that client find someone new. I have no ego involvement. But, if it seems to be a match, I will ask them where I should put most of my focus with them.
My approach
I first ask them why they want to start therapy, which will prompt them to tell me their present issues. Then, I like to ask curiosity questions and get as much information as I can about their past, so we can, together, see how that might have informed their present problems. I like to identify the seams where the past meets the present.
