I have worked in the clinical field for more than seventeen years. During that time, I provided services related to mental health and substance abuse across a variety of settings. The most important things to me in therapy are honesty and trust; without these things, progress is difficult. You will find me to be genuine and transparent. I do not have hidden agendas or preconceived ideas about what the best answer is to a problem. My goal is to work toward your goals using your strengths and honoring your preferences to encourage progress.
My approach
My approach to counseling is above all person-centered. I believe in building upon your strengths and developing a plan that is aligned with your beliefs and values. My work utilizes Evidence-Based Practices, primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Therapy. Mindfulness and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy are also frequently integrated into my work. My primary focus is assisting individuals in their pursuit of recovery from addiction, depression, anxiety, and other life challenges.
My focus
My ideal client is someone who has a desire for change. You do not have to know what that change looks like or to see a path that leads there. We can figure that out together.
My communication style
I find sessions to be the most effective when you are able to relax and truly express yourself. Therapy is a cooperative process. I feel it is important to truly listen to those I work with and to ask questions to ensure that I am understanding correctly.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was drawn to psychology by my desire to understand why we make certain choices and what makes individuals happy, or more fulfilled. I love to learn and approach things with curiosity rather than judgment. I have specialized certifications in the fields of addiction and the provision of services through telehealth. I participate in continuing education each year to improve my understanding of different counseling theories/techniques, to increase my knowledge of different cultures/populations, and to ensure that I am providing ethically sound practice. I am currently licensed in several states (Florida, Alaska, Utah, and California).
My goals for you
My goal is to provide you with knowledge, skills, tools, support, and accountability to reach your personal goals. I do encourage you to work between sessions to apply the skills and knowledge gained in the session as it helps you to achieve progress more quickly.
My first session with you
A first session is generally a time for us to get to know each other. I will ask you to share a bit about yourself, your history, and the things that brought you to therapy. Additionally, we will begin work to identify your goals and a plan for how we will work toward those goals.
