Hello: My name is Sharon Wilke Otrembiak. I’m licensed as a professional clinical counselor and school counselor in the state of Oregon. As a counselor I assist clients to learn strategies to regulate emotions, restructure thoughts, and make behavioral changes for optimal mental health.
My approach
Using a holistic approach to therapy with a focus on nutrition and exercise as strategies to improve mental health and the use of talk therapy. I begin the therapy session by developing rapport with the client using unconditional positive regard and empathy. Depending on the presenting problem/ mental health issue I use either cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, and/or mindfulness. When working with a client living with substance abuse within the family I use a 12 step approach. Homework is part of the therapy process.
My focus
I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults during individual sessions. I typically work with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, ADHD, grief, and trauma. I also see clients who are dealing with substance abuse in their family.
My communication style
It is very important for me to develop a trusting respectful relationship with the client. I do this by actively listening to the client with empathy and respect. I use questions to explore feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. There may be some psycho-education to teach skills, strategies, and interventions.
My journey to mental healthcare
I began my professional career as an elementary teacher and through the years I realized I enjoyed listening to students’ stories/ problems more than teaching. This led me to earn a BS degree in psychology and MA degrees in professional clinical counseling and school counseling. I am a compassionate introvert by nature so active empathetic listening is part of who I am. Working with clients as a team to reduce mental health symptoms and/or to resolve an issue brings me great fulfillment. The ultimate goal of therapy is for the client to become the best version of themselves.
My goals for you
Therapy goals are determined by the client. Through a conversation we are able to establish a couple of goals to achieve during the therapeutic process. These goals are reviewed every 6 months to evaluate progress. It is vital for the client to have a reduction in frequency, duration, and intensity of symptoms.
My first session with you
The first session is about developing a respectful and trusting rapport with the client. During the initial conversation I conduct a detailed intake assessment which focuses on how biological, psychological and social factors affect the person’s thoughts, feelings and behavior. We will also establish a treatment plan with goals and objectives.
