Hello! I’m Ebony Vaporean-Bussey-Payne, and I’m a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. I’ve been licensed since 2016 and began seeing individuals in 2013. In my ten years of practice, I have worked with children, teens, and adults. I also have experience working with new mothers and first responders. My focus at this time is anxiety, depression, job stress, and family stress.
My approach
I believe the individual is the expert, and I'm here to help provide support and tools on your journey. I use multiple modalities and adapt to each individual's needs. I come from a client-centered background and will often use CBT and solution-focused techniques if appropriate.
My focus
I enjoy working with new mothers/postpartum, depression, anxiety, and first responders. At this time, I'm only seeing adults.
My communication style
I am a genuine person and like to be transparent with my clients. I believe trust and vulnerability are important in the therapeutic relationship. When appropriate, I believe humor and candor can be so healing. I will often use metaphors to help create self-compassion.
My journey to mental healthcare
I first fell in love with psychology in high school and majored in psychology at San Diego State. I’ve worked with youth in the foster care system, kids/adults in an outpatient setting, and the public for crisis intervention through the 911 system. I’m passionate about helping others reach their full potential and heal.
My goals for you
I believe goal setting is a collaborative process. What good would it be for me to just tell you what to do? Most of us know what we would like, but it is the getting there that is the challenge. To assist with this, I will typically ask the miracle question to help understand what each individual is working towards so we can set realistic and obtainable goals to help each person build confidence in the process.
My first session with you
In the first session, following our intake appointment, I really enjoyed having an open dialogue in which we got to know each other. It is so important to make sure that I am the right fit for you. I also go over safety concerns and review limits of confidentiality/informed consent so there are no surprises later in sessions. We will discuss what you would like out of therapy and how we can work towards that goal.
