Hi there, I'm Sarah!

Hello! I am Sarah Marx Poulain, LMFT. I am licensed in California and Colorado with nearly 20 years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, depression, trauma and abuse, coping with grief and loss, body image & parenting concerns, and women's issues. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion and I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs.

My approach

I come from a systems perspective, and use a strength-based, person-centered approach to my work with clients. I blend in aspects of Narrative therapy, collaborative therapy, and solution-focused therapy in approach to supporting my clients.

My focus

I have worked with clients across the age ranges, including families with young children, school-aged children, teens, and adults. I have supported my clients in navigating concerns related to Adverse Childhood Experience (ACES), Trauma & Abuse, Body Image and Self Love, Stress & Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Forgiveness, Parenting Concerns, and issues related to Race and Identity.

My communication style

I provide a calm and grounded space for my sessions with clients. I am direct, kind, and respectful, and it is important to me that my clients feel seen, heard, and validated in their experience with me.

My journey to mental healthcare

Since I was young, I have had a passion for supporting others, especially those who are experiencing challenges in their lives. Throughout my teens and young adulthood, I was the friend that people came to when they needed to talk about things that they were struggling with. As I explored other careers, I felt pulled to do more that supported people in navigating life's challenges on a personal level. I do this work because I have a strong belief in people, their strengths, their capacities, and their internal wisdom. I believe that, with a little support, people can recognize these strengths and capacities and use them to move out of challenges and thrive.

My goals for you

I work collaboratively with my clients to create goals that align with their reasons for seeking support, and that can serve as a guide for our work together. I believe in checking in on progress regularly to determine if goals are still aligned and if any shifts or changes need to be made based on our sessions over time.

My first session with you

Clients should expect to be met with kindness and curiosity by a clinician who is genuinely interested in who they are and how best to support them. We will discuss what brought you to therapy, what your hopes are in terms of results, and complete initial documents and key assessments. I will answer any questions you have and we will set a consistent schedule for our sessions moving forward.
