Hello, my name is Sophia Akyeampong and I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. My approach to therapy is using a lot of CBT, mindfulness techniques, art therapy, a family systems approach, couples therapy, and play therapy when I work with children. My focus area of practice is dealing with mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. I work with processing trauma (adult and childhood), and relationship problems.
My approach
I tend to use an integrated therapeutic approach pulling from many theories. The common approaches I use are CBT, family systems, solution-focused therapy, play therapy, Trauma-focused CBT, and Gestalt.
My focus
I like to work with high-functioning clients, I do not work with substance addiction, court-ordered, or eating disorders. I prefer not to conduct crisis management therapy via telehealth. I enjoy working with clients who have some insight into their condition, are seeking to change, and, open to completing homework assignments.
My communication style
I create a calm, safe environment for my clients. I like to have an environment that uses a person's 5 senses to keep them engaged in the moment and fully present in the session. I enjoy having calming music playing during certain therapeutic activities, and would like my client to be in a place free from any distractions.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was attracted to the mental health field after having my first child and dealing with his behavioral issues. Learning of his autism diagnosis, I knew I needed to be his advocate. This has led me to a career working mainly with children dealing with mental health issues, helping families learn to function as a working system, learning how to help others process their trauma, and providing tools to teach a person how to manage their mood. I love the mental health field, I see the value in providing effective therapy for others and how the change improves lives.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting as a collaborative task with the client, both agreeing on the goals, making sure they are realistic and achievable, and are geared towards change for the better.
My first session with you
A warm and open conversation that they can be their authentic self, as they will be engaging with a genuine, empathetic, and authentic therapist.
